Hervey Bay

The Gateway to Fraser Island

Bucket List must do’s

While you’re waiting to depart from Hervey to Fraser Island, don’t miss out on exploring what the Bay has to offer. We’ve included 3 of our most favourite things to do in Hervey Bay below.

Urangan Pier

Urangan Pier is a historic pier in Hervey Bay that was used in the early 1900s as an extension of the railway line from Pialba that helped transfer cargo between rail and ships. The pier used to be over 1.1km but has now been reduced to 868 metres. It is a great walk to experience the ocean air and can also provide a stunning view of the sunset over Point Vernon.

Sunsets

If you’re big into watching sunsets and don’t want to walk the Pier, sunset at the beach is a great alternative! The commonly calm waters in the bay can provide for a serene sunset experience that could be made even better with a picnic blanket and some fish and chips from Maddigans.

Hervey Bay Esplanade

The Hervey Bay Esplanade spans for approximately 17km along the beach front from beyond the Urangan Boat Harbour to Gatakers Bay and runs through the suburbs of Urangan, Shelly Beach, Torquay, Scarness, Pliable and Point Vernon. Depending on which suburb you stroll there are cafes and small, local shops!

Best places to eat

The early bird gets the worm! Wake up to a lovely breakfast or brunch overlooking the beautiful blue waters in the bay. We’ve selected some of the best local restaurants that we frequent at and recommend you check them out to!

What to do

Tick off those bucket list items and really make the most of what the Fraser Coast has to offer. If you’re lucky enough to be in Hervey Bay during whale watching season, July to October, make sure to head on out and enjoy a day seeing these giant creatures up close! Want to experience the Western side of Fraser Island? The best way to get to the Western side is via. Boat, so book a remote Fraser Experience.
