Do I need travel insurance?
Yes it is highly recommended that you have travel insurance, especially if you’re holding an international licence.
What are the drivers licence requirements for hiring a vehicle?
Hiring a vehicle? Hirers must be over 25 years of age. Drivers must be over 23 years of age and have held a current open vehicle driver’s licence for at least 2 years. International travellers must have a current international licence.
Joining a Tag Along Tour? Drivers must be over 21 years of age and have held a current open vehicle driver’s licence for at least 2 years.
What payment options are available?
Fraser Dingo 4wd Hire excerpts; cash, credit card, (visa or mastercard – AMEX not accepted) and internet banking.
Do I need to pay a credit card bond?
Yes all our vehicle hires require a credit card bond of $2,500 AUD. This bond is authorised when you hire the vehicle and then cancelled up to 2 business days after you return the vehicle in hired condition, once it has been checked over by our mechanic during office hours.
Excess Reduction Cover options apply to groups with all drivers over 25. Please see our Excess Reduction Cover document for more information.
What time does the barge to K'gari Fraser Island leave?
The barge to Fraser Island departs from River Heads, just a 15 minute drive from our Urangan office, and arrives at Kingfisher Bay. Suitable barge times are dependent on your safety briefing appointment (please allow 2 hours). Our friendly staff are here to help you find the best option for you!
Do I need to do a 4wd safety briefing?
Yes, this is a government requirement, and is usually best done the morning of your departure to K’gari Fraser Island. Safety briefings take between 1-1.5 hours to complete, giving you the time to view your itinerary, understand how to operate your vehicle and safely explore the island.
Where is Hervey Bay and our location?
Hervey Bay is situated approx. 3.5 hours north of Brisbane on the Fraser Coast. The barge to Fraser Island departs from River Heads, a 30 min drive from Hervey Bay or 15 minutes from our office. The hire vehicle is picked up and returned to our office in Urangan, Hervey Bay. We are also very close to the Hervey Bay airport, where flights come in from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, making us the perfect destination for travellers visiting the area!
Please note – we are not located in Rainbow Beach nor do we access the ferry via Inskip Point.
What type of vehicles do we hire?
Our hire cars are 5 seater Toyota Prados with an automatic transmission. They are great for the novice driver. All our vehicles have their own name and colour, so you can get to know your vehicle persona! Plus they look great in your K’gari trip photos.
Is it hard to 4WD on K'gari Fraser Island?
No – surprisingly, 4WDriving isn’t as hard as everybody imagines! Although tracks can get rough, if you take it easy and listen to instructions, you will have an unforgettable and enjoyable experience!

Where can I camp on K'gari Fraser Island?
You can camp in all the designated National Park campgrounds and beach camping zones, between Indian Head and Dilli Village on the Eastern beach. There are also some private campgrounds on the East Coast of Fraser Island if you are willing to pay more and get better facilities, such as undercover shelter sheds for wet weather, hot showers and flushing toilets. Ask us for more details.
What should I bring on my K'gari Fraser Island trip?
- Pack light with enough clothing for your trip,
- A jumper and raincoat,
- Sunscreen, insect repellant, hat,
- Swimwear and a towel (the lakes are great for swimming),
- A camera,
- Money for souvenirs, snacks etc.
- Practical shoes for walking (because the sand gets very hot in summer)
- Toilet paper for camping
- Your food
- Sense of fun and adventure!
