What is a K’gari Tag Along Tour?

A K’gari 4WD Tag Along Tour combines the adventure of driving on the world’s largest sand island with the knowledge and support of an experienced guide.

Your guide leads the 4WD convoy in the front vehicle while guests follow in our 4WDs, travelling along K’gari’s famous beaches and sandy inland tracks to explore the island’s lakes, rainforest and iconic natural attractions.

Eligible guests have the opportunity to take turns driving a 4WD on K’gari, or you can simply relax as a passenger and enjoy the journey.

No previous 4WD or sand-driving experience is required. Before setting off, drivers receive a comprehensive safety briefing and practical guidance to help you confidently experience K’gari’s unique driving conditions.

Our 2 Day K’gari 4WD Beach House Adventure and 3 Day K’gari 4WD Escape combine the excitement of a guided tag-along tour with meals and comfortable beach house accommodation – so after a day of exploring, there’s no tent to pitch or campsite to set up.

To drive: You must be 21 years or older, hold a current full/open driver’s licence for a minimum of two years and meet our driver requirements. Prefer not to drive? You’re just as welcome to join the adventure as a passenger.

What Will I See on a K’gari 4WD Tour?

World Heritage-listed K’gari (Fraser Island) is home to an extraordinary mix of beaches, freshwater lakes, towering sand dunes, flowing creeks and ancient rainforest – all waiting to be explored by 4WD.

Travel along the iconic 75 Mile Beach, where the Pacific Ocean meets seemingly endless stretches of sand. Along the way, discover colourful sand formations, vast sand blows and some of K’gari’s most famous landmarks, including Eli Creek, the Maheno Shipwreck and The Pinnacles.

Venture inland along sandy 4WD tracks to experience one of K’gari’s most remarkable natural features – subtropical rainforest growing from sand. Walk beneath towering trees at Central Station and Pile Valley before discovering the island’s spectacular freshwater lakes, including the crystal-clear waters and white silica sands of Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie).

On our longer K’gari adventures, tides and conditions allow us to travel further along the Eastern Beach towards Champagne Pools and Indian Head (Tukkee), where dramatic coastal scenery provides another completely different side of the island.

Wildlife is part of the experience too. Keep watch for K’gari dingoes, goannas, birds and marine life as you travel, with seasonal opportunities to spot whales offshore.

Things to Know Before You Go

• Tours depart from Hervey Bay, starting at our Urangan office (near Hervey Bay Airport).
• Recommended ages 18 – 55+ years
• Drivers must be 21+ years old, with a valid licence and a credit card for the bond ($2,500)
• Option to reduce excess to $0 for $50 per person (no bond hold). Terms and conditions apply.
• No previous off-road experience required – full safety briefing provided
• Free select hostel pickups available in Hervey Bay
• Free street parking available, or secure fenced parking for an additional cost
• 2 day tours return around 6:00 – 6:15 pm on the final day
• 3 day tours return around 4:00 – 4:15 pm on the final day
• Due to the island’s remote location, avoid booking evening bus departures on the return day
• Luggage storage available for an additional cost
