Our guided tag-along tours give you the opportunity to drive your own 4WD while following an experienced local guide, making it the perfect mix of adventure, freedom and expert knowledge.

With a maximum of 7 guests per vehicle, our tours are designed for comfort and a more personal experience. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, with friends, or as a family with teenage kids, you’ll join a small group of like-minded travellers exploring one of Australia’s most spectacular World Heritage landscapes.

Your experienced guide leads the way in the front vehicle, sharing local knowledge about the island’s natural history, wildlife, and cultural significance. If you’ve never driven on sand before, don’t worry – we provide a thorough safety briefing and guidance so you can enjoy learning to drive on sand in a safe and supportive environment.

What is a Tag Along Tour?

A Tag Along Tour combines the freedom of driving with the knowledge and safety of travelling with an experienced guide.

Your guide leads the group in the front vehicle while guests drive the following 4WDs along the island’s beaches and inland tracks.

No previous off-road experience is required. Our team will show you everything you need to know so you can confidently experience driving on sand.

Drivers must be 21 years or older with a valid open licence, OR join the tour as a passenger and enjoy the ride.

What Will I See on the Tour?

K’gari; meaning “paradise” in the language of the Butchulla people, lives up to its name with breathtaking scenery at every turn.

Drive along 75 Mile Beach, where the Pacific Ocean stretches endlessly beside towering sand dunes. Along the way, you may see colourful sand formations, vast sand blows, and wildlife unique to the island.

Venture inland along sandy tracks to discover ancient rainforests growing directly from sand, as well as some of the island’s famous perched freshwater lakes.

2-Day Tour

Departing weekly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays (peak season only) and Thursdays – this tour explores the island’s central highlights, including:

• Lake McKenzie
• Eli Creek
• The Pinnacles
• Maheno Shipwreck
• Central Station

3-Day Tour

See everything that a 2 Day tour does, plus more!

Departing weekly on Fridays (Thursdays during winter months), the extended tour travels further north to explore:

• Indian Head
• Champagne Pools
• Other freshwater lakes, depending on tides and conditions

Things to Know Before You Go

• Tours depart from Hervey Bay, starting at our Urangan office (near Hervey Bay Airport).
• Recommended ages 18 – 55+ years
• Drivers must be 21+ years old, with a valid licence and a credit card for the bond ($2,500)
• Option to reduce excess to $0 for $50 per person (no bond hold). Terms and conditions apply.
• No previous off-road experience required – full safety briefing provided
• Free select hostel pickups available in Hervey Bay
• Free street parking available, or secure fenced parking for an additional cost
• 2 day tours return around 6:00 – 6:15 pm on the final day
• 3 day tours return around 4:00 – 4:15 pm on the final day
• Due to the island’s remote location, avoid booking evening bus departures on the return day
• Luggage storage available for an additional cost
• Minimum numbers required for tours to depart
• If fewer than two vehicles are on the tour, the guide will drive the lead vehicle

What to Bring

A small bag with:

• A change of clothes, swimwear and appropriate footwear
• A towel
• Water bottle
• Warm clothing (K’gari can get cold at night)
• Hat, sunnies & sunscreen

You’re welcome to bring alcohol and snacks if you wish (no spirits or glass).
